Kids are a blessing and a curse at the same time. When they come tell you how much they love you and give you kisses, it’s a blessing. When you’re not yet awake and they’re running all over and you’ve got to keep up, it’s a curse. Well, almost.
Little kids seem to have a never-ending supply of energy. My personal belief is that they suck the energy right from us and that’s why we find them so draining. However, by taking better care of yourself and your health, you can keep up with them. And you can even surpass them.
So, you’re here because you want to get fit for your kids. That’s great! I can’t wait to help you! But you should know that I think you need to do it for yourself first and foremost. It’s ok to be selfish sometimes especially when it comes to taking care of our health. This is really important.
We never want to think about a day when we’re not around, but it is the fate all of us will face one day. However, by taking good care of ourselves, we are more likely to live to an old age with little health problems plaguing us. That gives us more time to watch our children grow into adults and even start their own families.
Getting fit for your kids is so much more than that too though. Because it might not just be you that needs to get fit.
Do your kids sit inside and look at their smartphones and tablets all afternoon when they’re not busy with school work? Do they actually spend time with friends or do they wordlessly chat with them via their phones? Technology really has made our lives easier and given us ways to be more efficient but it has also set us back in regards to being more active.
Think about it. Growing up, we all played outside. We spent very little time indoors. We would run down the street to find our friends and go play. These days, we see much less of this. Plus, experts say that the more active kids are, the better they will do academically.
So let’s start a new trend! Get fit for your kids and get fit WITH your kids! You’ll be killing two birds with one stone. Three birds actually! 1) You will get fit, 2) your kids will get fit, and 3) you will all get to spend more meaningful time together. What a way to win as a family!
Here are some suggestions!
Go to the park
The playground is great for young and active kids to run off their energy. Just don’t sit on the bench the whole time. Run around with them. And you know what? Go ahead and swing and slide! Embrace that childlike wonder. It will reduce your stress and go a long way to helping you feel better about yourself.
Walk the neighborhood
A good family walk is always nice. If you live in a big neighborhood, you can take turns picking the route. You can also play games like “I Spy” or anything else you can think of to make it more fun.
Jumping rope is an incredible way to burn off calories. It’s fun for HIIT workouts too. Get the kids jump ropes of their own and go out in to the backyard together. See who can jump the most at once!
Go for a swim
Live in a warmer climate or during the hotter months, you can go for a swim together. Kids love being in the pool and even if you have to hunker around little ones, you can do your squats and leg lifts in the water. The water adds more resistance too without you feeling it so you’ll get a killer workout under the water.
Make an obstacle course
Here’s one you can change up in countless ways that will give everyone such a fun time. All you need are some safe obstacles to lay around the backyard like small orange cones, hula hoops, and anything else you can think of to mark the area. A soft tunnel is also a nice addition which you can usually find at any toy store or sporting goods store. In a pinch, a tunnel for a dog would do the trick. Then, use a stop watch and time everyone as they run through it to see who the winner is. It’s such great fun that will have you all laughing your way to better health. You should also let your kids have the chance to set up the obstacle course too so they will be even more inclined to participate.
Have a dance party
Young and active kids love to wiggle and jiggle so put on your favorite songs and shake it up. This is also your chance to teach them about the good music from back in our day so turn it up and get moving!
There are dozens more ways to get fit with kids and motivate them to be active too. Remember, kids copy what they see. If they see you always glued to your phone and sedentary, then they will turn out the same way. If they see you practicing good exercise habits and finding ways to be active throughout the day such as purposely parking further away from the supermarket so you’ll walk more, then they will grow into adults that do the same. Be an inspiration for your children while you take care of your health. The more you move, the more energy you’ll have so hop to it!
